Main Character of ‘Sweetest Taboo’

Isabel Cruz is 15 years old. She is a typical Southern California teenage girl…or, is she? Isabel thinks she’s pretty typical. She comes from an immigrant family, like most kids from her high school and neighborhood. Her parents are hard working, they value education, they’re supporting and loving. Her life is in order. She’s smart, attractive, and has lots of friends. Always thinking of the future, of college, of a professional career, Isabel tries to do the right thing and she excels in all she undertakes, be it school, sports or being a good friend. But when Isabel sets her sights on her high school swim coach, everything changes…for better or worse.

Isabel’s Letter to Santa

Dear Santa,

I realize I may be a little too old to write to you. It’s been, what? At least 4 or 5 years since the last time you heard from me? Probably. But Santa, I have quite a serious problem and if I remember correctly, you were always very attentive in reading my letters and more importantly, you always delivered! I am in dire need of your commitment to delivering, I am in need of a miracle, really. Santa, I’ve never wanted anything as much as I want this. In fact, I’ve never really needed anything, but have asked you for things that I wanted instead and for this I am sorry. This Christmas I am not asking you for something I want, but rather, for something I don’t think I can live without.

See, the issue is that I’m with someone I can’t have. I know, I know, my problem, right? But you see, I didn’t mean to get myself into this, somehow it just happened before I could even think straight. My feelings got the better of me, my judgment was blurred and then before I knew it, I had fallen in love with a guy, well a man really, that was not available to me. Santa, this Christmas I am asking you to give me Mr. Steven’s heart. I don’t think I have it, well, that’s not true. He tells me all of the time that my heart is his, but how can it be if he belongs to another woman? That other woman is his wife, so I guess technically I am that other woman. Oh God, I feel ashamed to even tell you all of this. But Santa, I don’t know what else to do but to share this and to ask something of you that I am hoping you can accomplish. Santa, all I want this Christmas, all I need in fact, is Mr. Steven’s heart. I need for his heart to belong to me. I need him to love me with all of his heart and no one else, not even his wife.

Have I crossed the line? Will you tear up this letter and shun me forever? I hope not. I need a miracle this Christmas, Santa. If miracles really can come true, and if you really know what’s in my heart and know that in spite of what I’ve shared, I’ve been a really good person not only this year, but since I can remember, then you won’t disregard my request, will you?

With lots of hopeful thoughts and wishes,

Isabel
